We caught up with the lovely Mel Welford (50), who recently completed her Teacher Training course with us, to ask her about her experience…
Which Yoga Teacher Training course did you do?
I attended the 9 weekend/200hr YTT from May to September 2017
Why did you choose this course over any others?
I choose this particular course as I wanted to take a bit more time to absorb all the learning and to take time to enjoy the whole experience. Being a slightly more mature student, I thought that an intensive course would be to ‘full on’ for me. I definitely made the right decision for me as I found the course amazing but intense. I was glad to have time between the weekends to absorb everything and to consolidate the learning with my own practice at home. I chose Kawai Purapura after attending one of their Wellness Retreats in 2016. I loved the vibe of KP, the teachers, the variety of yoga styles taught and Jaynee’s food!
What made you want to be a Yoga Teacher?
Initially, I didn’t have a plan to teach Yoga – I just wanted to deepen my own practice and learn more about Yoga. However, the course was so inspiring, on completion, I am now keen to share my newly found knowledge and passion for Yoga.
What have been the highlights of the course for you?
The highlights for the course for me were the teachers and my fellow students. Amazing, inspiring people. The variety in the teaching styles was great. The authentic nature of the teachings and integration of the styles of yoga was perfect. It was truly a life-changing process for me.
Now you’re qualified, what’s your next step / what do you hope to do?
As a Registered Nurse, I hope to combine my Nursing skills and Yoga Teacher training to work 1:1 with people who may not feel comfortable attending a Yoga class especially those who may have health issues. I am also planning to run small group classes focused on improving well-being through gentle yoga practice, accessible to all levels of health and fitness.
If you had any advice for someone considering the course, what would you tell them?
My advice to anyone considering YTT at KP would be – DO IT! It is a wonderful, inspiring, life-changing experience.
